Sun Run Blog-Week One

My name is Kurt and I am a runner. Injured but still a runner. Here I am blogging about the passion I found thirteen years ago and now my daughter Emily has joined my journey. I am excited she has decided to join Sportmed BC InTraining clinic with me but don't want to push her or get overly excited about her decision. I really want Em to enjoy running on her own. Time will tell.

We had a Vancouver Sun photographer come by on our first day to take Emily and mine's profile pictures. He was a pretty funny guy. Emily enjoyed the shoot. Some running shots and some face shots. He kept calling us Rock Stars.

Saturday the 15th is my first run since November 6th, 2010. A knee injury has kept me from enjoying the sport. Have been nervous for a few days prior to the clinic. My nervousness fell away when we discovered a great group in the River Springs Rec Centre Clinic. Erin Smandych our Clinic Coordinator knows how to make so many comfortable in an instant. I am doing the Learn to Run 10K clinic with Em. Have to start from the beginning to ease back into the stress on my body. There are some old friends and some familiar faces as well as people who are completely new to running. Going to be another great running adventure.

My first run as smoother than I thought. A little pain in my knee but better than I anticipated. Run two on Tuesday evening done on a Treadmill at my local Recreation Centre and run three is tonight so we'll see how we feel tomorrow.

Recovery

My knee is finally settled down from the pain mid week. MCL still sore but not constant. Will consult with a human mechanical specialist in the coming week to assess my physical capabilities in the near future.
2011 Sun Run meeting on Wednesday evening to strategize on the coming run clinics.

The day after

I can't believe the pain I was in yesterday. My knee took such a beating from my Tuesday evening 30 minute run. I was hobbling around all day yesterday. Could have used a cane.
The Knee ProTec band I was using did me no good at all. I am sure if I used it for PFPS (Patella Femoral Pain Syndrome) of ITBS (Illiotibial Band Syndrome) it probably would have worked.
I am going to have to see a specialist about the issue with my MCL now.

Fresh Start

Have not run a single kilometer in the past two weeks. Have been trying to get my left MCL to settle down on its own. Pain has subsided  significantly but has just not gone away completely. When I have been out with my running friends, I have seen other runners using a neoprene strap around their knees I assume for extra support and tension at and around the knee. I bought one this morning at the Runners Den (http://www.runnersden.ca/). Paul Slaymaker knew exactly what I was looking for and handed me the "Knee Pro-Tec by Pro-Tec Athletics. I have had it on for only 20 minutes and I do not feel pain at all. So far so good. I will say the instructions on the product are well thought out. They show how to use the product for different injury types and also encourages the user to stength train for the area affected. I wish more companies would take this approach with their products.
Will be testing the product out on a 5-7km run tonight.

Knee issues again 2.0

Out for a 7.8 km run with Norma and Erin on Sunday morning and could hardly walk that afternoon. MCL is driving me crazy. The runs themselves feel great. No knee pain at all during but afterwards, it feels like a baseball bat was used to smash the inside of my left knee. Better today (Monday) but still tender when walking.
Have a Doctors appointment for Sept. 2 so we'll have to wait til then to start the healing process with professionals. Arghhhhhh.

Clinic Poll

Have asked most of my running friends to send me their thoughts on what makes a great clinic tick. Have received one response so far and am compiling everything together. Will incorporate a lot of the feedback into my fall clinic.
Start on a shirt logo design and might look into hats as well.

Knee issues again

Ran with Norma and Erin yesterday and went a bit farther than my right knee would let me minus the pain. Sore MCL and it will take a few days to recover. Must treat it with Kid Gloves as it is not getting better. A beautiful run though. We ran over the new Pitt River Bridge and back to Hyde Creek Rec Centre. 13Km in total. 10 would have been better but live and learn.
