Up swing

I am finally feeling better. Most pain is gone. I began weight training yesterday. Feeling a bit drained of energy today but that will go away with more work.
I will begin running in the first couple of weeks in January.
Sun Run Clinics are progressing forward. We have the New Leader Training Day on January 10th. Looking forward to getting under way.

Cathy's birthday coming up on the first. Will have to get her presents and dinner and a movie too.

Recovery

After six weeks of back/leg problems I am finally on the mend and feeling much better. There is still a tightness in my leg due to the sciatic nerve problem and I have lost a lot of power from the affected muscles. My range of motion is limited. I slept last night through the night and did not take any type of medication at all.
Will begin a weight program in January to rehabilitate the leg and foot.

Proper diagnosis

Finally had a professional diagnosis. My x-rays returned and I have degeneration in disks L5/S1 and minor degeneration in L3/L4. I also have inflamation in my SI (sacroilliac) joint. My sciatic nerve is still being pinched but it is getting better. Only from mid calf down to my toes is being affected. No longer my whole leg. Am currently researching back injuries and how to either manipulate or manage the pain associated with my issues.

Worse than Ever

Have developed a pinched nerve eminating from my spine. (my own opinion. not a diagnosis from a medical professional)My right leg has gone numb (partial paralysis)down the outside of the hip, quadracep, soleus and down to my foot (affecting all digits)I can plantar flex my toes but dorsiflection is no longer possible. I am walking with a very noticable limp and the stronger muscles which cause medial rotation of my foot are becoming strongest and lateral rotation is no longer a capability.
Have had xrays taken of my lower spinal column and should be getting the results this afternoon. I don't expect firm results as I will be needing a CAT scan to determine the L5-S1 disc in my spinal column is degenerating. Only solution at this time is probably surgery. The longer this goes on the more rehabilitation I will have to do for my lower leg and foot. I have lost most power in my lower leg.

Problems still

Still having issues with my hips. They ache most of the time which affects my work and my running. Hard time walking sometimes. Still seeing a chiropractor and he is helping with my lower back but not doing much for my hips. Am awaiting a visit to my GP for the prescription orthotics. I hope this will help my pain.
Wet weather season has arrived. Dark and dank this late November day.

Experiment No. 1

Have taken the past two and one half weeks off due to injury of my lower back. L5/S1 is the problem area. Pain is debilitating but the fatigue created is almost as bad. My temperament has been something to be desired as well.

Last evening I went out for my first run since the injury and today it is like I am a different person. I am joking and quite jovial today.

Finally feeling 90% to complete health.

Looking forward to gaining more health and fitness. My fitness level has really dropped. My cardio seemed to be quite good but my muscle strength was so low. I couldn't climb David Avenue hill complete. Had to stop twice due to muscle pain.

Have begun a stretching program and light weight rehab program for myself.

Welcome Back

Been over a year since I last made an entry.
Have been busy over the past year. Ran a marathon in June (www.edgetoedge.com) and finished in 4.5 hours. I ran across the finish line. That was my main goal. This was my second marathon and will do another in five years time.
Started training five young men in the art of speed, endurance and strength. We did three months of training which started in the summer.
Riley, (my son) Nick, Tyler, Tanner and Jay had fun and got a lot better at their reaction time and speed (full out sprints). We have completed our sessions for the fall and will start up again in early spring to prepare them for their spring sports.

I am once again involved with the Vancouver Sun Run as a representative for BC SportMed and their clinics to prepare thousands of people to run a 10 kilometre race.

I am currently injured and seeing a chiropractor to help me heal. He wants to prescribe proper otrthotics to help me stay healthy. Will keep you updated on this as we proceed.

Basketball game tonight. Our team is doing great this year, Haven't lost a league game yet. We'll see how we do tonight.
